Organic synthesis from CO2: coupling electro and thermo-catalysis

Considering the need for carbon sources alternative to fossil fuels, the catalytic transformation of CO2 has been considered recently. One possible strategy is proposed here which implies the electroreduction of CO2 to CO, using renewable electricity, followed by CO conversion to useful organic compounds (polymer precursors for example). The successful development of this strategy requires the efficient coupling of electrocatalytic and thermocatalytic materials and processes, which will be designed to unlock the conversion of CO2 to cyclic esters and anhydrides.
