Smart Materials for Sustainable Buildings (IEA -EBC)

MOFs at the heart of new prospects for sustainable buildings: an article co-authored by Christian Serre, Scientific Director of DIM MaTerRE, has just been published in the 2025 annual report of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) programme.

Focusing on smart materials applied to the building sector, this article highlights the potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The research is presented by researchers from Annex 92: Menghao Qin, Christian Serre, Guillaume Maurin, Xin Zhang and Jianshun Zhang.

About Annex 92: this project aims to develop energy-efficient strategies for heating, cooling and air purification, drawing on innovative smart materials. In particular, it focuses on the use of advanced sorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which were recognised by the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, as well as their associated composites. This programme is based on international and interdisciplinary collaboration.
