Solar light-driven water splitting using the photocatalytic process from solution represents a promising technology aiming in the short and medium terms to market share of hydrogen production with the existing industries. Conversely, to H2 chemical fuel produced from a variety of feedstock (including fossil resources), the photocatalytic process aims to use a solar-to-energy conversion for sustainable chemical fuel production. Up to now, this technology reached a bottleneck and the low quantum efficiency hinders its large-scale development. The key challenges to advancing photocatalytic overall water splitting innovation to reach a high enough readiness level for successful commercialization are in material science and engineering. Inspired by Nature, the project aims to develop chiral photoactive material that allows for improving quantum efficiency by reaching a selective oxygen evolution reaction and reducing side reactions during the photocatalytic reaction.
