50 years of XAFS adventure in France: from the pioneers of LURE to the origins of the fourth generation

The XAFS50.FR conference, supported by DIM MaTerRE, will take place at SOLEIL from 5 to 9 October 2026.
How can we visualise the environment surrounding atoms? Over the past 50 years, XAFS (X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) spectroscopy has won over researchers from all disciplines thanks to its atomic and orbital selectivity combined with high sensitivity, offering unique insight into the structural and electronic properties of materials.
Developed in parallel with major advances in synchrotron radiation, XAFS spectroscopy has established itself step by step, becoming an indispensable tool for numerous scientific communities and in industry, and is now even beginning to be adapted for laboratory use with commercial spectrometers.
The XAFS50.FR event will bring together scientific history and future prospects, highlighting the pioneering experiments carried out at LURE (ACO, DCI, Super-ACO), the development of theoretical frameworks and the standardisation of analyses, and the current advances at SOLEIL and the ESRF-EBS, a fourth-generation source – a development that SOLEIL-II will soon join.
