The 2026 Grand Prix of the Fondation de la Maison de la Chimie Honors Christian Amatore and Jean-Marie Tarascon
The 2026 Grand Prix of the Fondation de la Maison de la Chimie has been jointly awarded to Professor Christian Amatore and Professor Jean-Marie Tarascon, in recognition of their major contributions to the fields of electrochemistry, materials chemistry, and electrochemical energy storage.
This distinction recognizes two scientific careers that have made profound contributions to the development of contemporary chemistry, both through the originality of their approaches and the significance of their work.
- Professor Christian AMATORE, for his outstanding multidisciplinary research in the field of electrochemistry. Widely regarded as one of the scientists who has profoundly reshaped modern molecular electrochemistry, he has established it as an essential tool in organic and organometallic synthesis, catalysis, analytical chemistry, and biology. His research has introduced new conceptual and methodological frameworks that have become international benchmarks. His most significant and pioneering contribution lies in the development of microelectrodes and nanoelectrodes.
- Professor Jean-Marie TARASCON, for his pioneering research on electrochemical energy storage. Through the breadth, originality, and impact of his work, he has profoundly influenced the fields of materials chemistry and electrochemistry, while helping to define new scientific and technological pathways for the energy transition. His contributions include high-voltage electrode materials, novel mechanisms of lithium reactivity, interface chemistry, eco-efficient synthesis, and alternatives to conventional lithium-ion technologies, notably sodium-ion, lithium-air, lithium-sulfur, and redox-flow batteries. He has also introduced new concepts for smarter and multifunctional battery systems.
The 2026 Grand Prix, worth €50,000 and accompanied by a bronze medal, will be presented to Professors Amatore and Tarascon during a formal ceremony on Wednesday, February 3, 2027, at the Maison de la Chimie in Paris, on the occasion of a symposium organized by the Fondation.
