Structural metallurgy

Research activities focusing on a new recycling process for aluminum alloys are carried on. This new approach consists in the direct extrusion of chips generated during the processing of the alloys, that are perfectly identified in terms of composition. It allows to avoid the remelting step, that consumes more energy, and leads to large losses of material. We are working on rationalizing the relationship between the processing parameters, the microstructure and chemistry of the extruded pieces, and their mechanical properties.

New projects are also aiming at characterizing the influence of impurity elements generated by the recycling steps on the properties of recycled alloys, more specifically on the role of oxygen in various Ti-alloys.
