INSIGHT

INtegrated online electrochemical mass Spectrometry for hIGH-throughput discovery in sustainable electrochemical sysTems

INSIGHT project aims to acquire a differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) instrument designed for real-time analysis of products formed in electrochemical systems operating under realistic (flow) conditions. The equipment will make it possible to detect and quantify gaseous and volatile species directly during operation, while also enabling the analysis of products distributed between gas and liquid phases. This addresses an important current limitation in electrochemistry, where reaction products are often only measured after their accumulation for a significant time, making it difficult to fully understand efficiency, selectivity, and degradation mechanisms and the effect of various operating parameters on these characteristics.

The new capability will be applied to research on CO2 capture and conversion, hydrogen-related reactions, batteries, and corrosion. By following product formation online, the equipment will help identify reaction pathways, improve the quantification of faradaic efficiencies, and guide the design of more selective, durable, and energy-efficient materials. The project therefore contributes to the development of sustainable technologies for energy conversion, storage, and environmental remediation, in line with the MaTerRE priorities on strategic gases, eco-compatible energies, and advanced characterization.
